The story

Both knees, and a long wait ahead

Corporal Hunter Smith of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon has spent more than a decade serving his community, including assignments on specialized tactical teams in the jail division. A former college athlete and Marine Corps reservist, staying physically ready is critical to his role. During an interaction with an adult in custody, Smith suffered severe injuries to both knees.

The challenge

Eight weeks of PT before surgery would even be discussed

During the incident, Smith took two hard impacts to his knees while restraining a combative inmate. An MRI later revealed significant meniscus damage in both knees and a right leg fracture. When he began trying to schedule treatment, he encountered the delays many injured first responders face.

  • “Most providers wanted me to do eight weeks of PT before even talking about surgery. I was looking at being months behind before I could even start recovering.”

The difference

Surgery within days, not months

After a lieutenant recommended contacting Ready Rebound, the process changed immediately. Within a few days, Smith met with a top orthopedic specialist, surgery was approved through workers’ comp, and he underwent his knee procedure.

Why it matters

Faster care keeps the rest of the office on duty

Delays in treatment don’t just affect injured officers. They impact entire departments. Extended recovery timelines lead to officers stuck on light duty, increased overtime, and added strain on limited personnel.

By accelerating access to specialists and treatment, Ready Rebound helped Smith begin recovery immediately instead of weeks or months of delays. Now, he can get back to doing what he loves: staying fit and serving his community.
